Updating from SuSE 7.1 to 8.1
Is it possible to update from 7.1 to 8.1?? I have a linux box (SuSE 7.1). My attempt here is trying to update my linuxbox to SuSE 8.1 which I downloaded to the hard drive from FTP site. But it does not let me update the version from the directory that files are located by saying "Can not find the image. Check the directory specification" under source medium selection. I would understand that the image file has to be created at first if this was the fresh installation but this is only the version update from 7.1 to 8.1. Is there any web-site that describe how to update the version from 7.1 to 8.1? There is not enough procedures or description when it comes to updating the version from its hard-drive that is downloaded from FTP site. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks in advance, Shinichi

Forget it. There is no way from 7.1 to even 8.0. In fact, so much has been changed between 7.3 to 8.0, that SuSE decided not to bother with it, although the boot.iso file appears to support it in the beginning. I wish that SuSE should be much more clear about what the boot.iso file can really do rather than making impressive splashes. Regards, G. H. S.

So what do you suggest I should do? Update my 7.1 1 by 1?? Even in that case, is there any site that walk through version update? Shinichi, I think everyone here would agree that updating is not a good idea at all on your system. A clean install from scratch would be your best course of action moving to 8.1 setup. There have just been way too many changes to even consider just an update on your machine. Do a fresh install and start new with 8.1, you will be pleased you took that route. Backup your files, but not your settings as most probably won't even work in the new 8.1 install. Patrick -- --- KMail v1.4.3 --- SuSE Linux Pro v8.0 --- Registered Linux User #225206
Is there any web-site that walk through a fresh installation ? I just don't want to wipe out my hard-drive without knowing what to do next. Shinichi, I think all the instructions for doing an install are on the ftp site you get your files and install disk from. At least that is my understanding of things, somebody else here can correct me, if that is not the case. You might also find some info on the SuSE database site. Good luck on your quest! I aggree with the rest Patrick said, but I would really suggest taking a backup of settings as well. (Especially if you have manually tweaked something.) When you have installed the new version, then you should not simply copy the backed-up settings back, but use them as reference. If you use some sort of dialup to connect to the internet, the settings for this are especially nice to have even if the new SuSE-version uses some different way of connecting. Some settings can be copied to a new installation without problem. I always just copy .fetchmailrc, .procmailrc, .pinerc to my new system. This also works across different distros. In some situations, I have been really happy to have an old working XF86Config file at hand. Regards Ole
Let's just say, a fresh installation is the best option, but SuSE FTP installation site says "Important note:It is not possible to generate installation CDs from a complete download. " So how do I intall SuSE 8.1 from downloaded files in CD or hard-drive? Yes, I just did that exact upgrade last night, and there were remarkably few problems. Others on the list have suggested saving conf files. Routinely I just recursively copy all of /etc into a safe place, and after the upgrade I do "diff -r -w /etc /home/upgrade/etc > /tmp/etc.diff" and then slog through it, either recreating local hacks or deciding to junk them.

If I remember correctly, the dirname it wants to see is the one labelled "8.1" on the FTP site. (You may have put it in a differently named directory on your own machine.) The "image" it wants, I think, is .../8.1/boot/root. Try adding and subtracting components until it's satisfied. And it will want ALL the stuff including, specifically, the lists of packages; otherwise it will complain "no package lists; cannot make proposal". James F.
