Dear List, I bought a USRobotics WinModem when they were new. I had so much trouble that I called them. It turns out that they had so many prodlems with the WinModem that they had a 'secret' policy: replace any WinModem with a real modem upon report of problems. Try your modem mfgr. Good Luck! The guys at BestBuy were cool. If it doesn't work they promised to take it back. Gotta return a defective video to the store next door so no big deal. (Tape was cut crooked, lack of quality control.)
No modems, win or non-win at WalMart. Wasted trip.

USERS don't care a whit about the geek argument about technical specs and architectures. They care that most of the modems that fit into the available slots on their mobos are PCI and winmodems. They care as much that said modems are much less costly. M$ can easily win that debate because consumers have decades of conditioning that price and availability are king.
Users I sometimes encopunter do care, but then they expect things to just work..Or work as advertised.
OK? Can we stay on topic?
Hope you bugged the modem manuacturer :). One nice well written e-mail should suffice, and one would hope that they get enough of those they will either makea driver for Linux, or decide to assist kernel programmers with details (this is probably a cheaper option).
Sigh ... doc
At least you spent 20 to find out it was winmodem, I was spent 50 UK sterling to find out that the store had lied to me...
