SuSE versus PCI Modems -- Serious Market Roadblock?
How does SuSE expect to make it in the general user marketplace if they cannot even talk to and through common PCI modems? (Given that ISA slots are becoming rare on newer mobos.) Sure seems that someone needs to address this before Micro$oft uses it in another of their attacks on the veracity of Linux in general and SuSE in specific. Meanwhile this means yet another trip to buy something else to replace a common piece of hardware that M$ readily utilizes and Linux/SuSE cannot. (Forced to buy a modem for 3x what a M$-compatible one costs is not cool. This is beginning to co$t like dealing with Apple all over again.) Sigh ... doc

I'd like to know if you've checked to see if this is a WinModem? If it's a PCI hardware modem then it should work. If it's one of those bloody WinModems then OF COURSE Linux can't use it because it's a Windows only modem that requires software to make up for it being neutered by the manufacture. Please. Check out http://linmodems.org/ to see if your common PCI modem is a full fledged hardware modem. If it's not then please do not blame Linux ...blame the company who made it and write them for drivers...which they do provide for Microsoft OS's. -- Ben Rosenberg ---===---===---===--- mailto:ben@whack.org Tell me what you believe.. Sigh is right- if you want M$ crap and compatibility with hardware that the dependant (check the meaning) manufacturers produce, go back to Windows. No one says you have to be free, you have to make the choice yourself. You want comfort and a dummy to suck, that's fine. Just don't bother me with "If M$ with it's convicted illegal monopoly can pressure commercial organisations into producing kit that only works with M$ crap, why can't Linux?" Buy a modem? - don't make me laugh- even here in the expensive UK a decent modem is a trivial buy decision, and you're not "(Forced to buy a modem for 3x what a M$-compatible one
costs" are you?

: How does SuSE expect to make it in the general user marketplace if they : cannot even talk to and through common PCI modems? (Given that ISA : slots are becoming rare on newer mobos.) You are probably using a WinModem...this is not a /real/ modem. : Sure seems that someone needs to address this before Micro$oft uses : it in another of their attacks on the veracity of Linux in general and : SuSE in specific. Heh, what's microshaft going to say? Hey, Linux can't use our proprietary modem architect which uses more CPU, more memory, does the de/modulation via software rather then using the hardware, and it is has a slower download rate due to all of the above, therefore Linux sucks?? heh, don't think so, they'd shoot themselves in the foot on that one :) : Meanwhile this means yet another trip to buy something else to replace : a common piece of hardware that M$ readily utilizes and Linux/SuSE : cannot. You miss the point. USERS don't care a whit about the geek argument about technical specs and architectures. They care that most of the modems that fit into the available slots on their mobos are PCI and winmodems. They care as much that said modems are much less costly. M$ can easily win that debate because consumers have decades of conditioning that price and availability are king.

I paid $39.95 for SuSE 8.0 Personal and $70. or so for StarOffice 6.0 (because 5.2 is inadequate to the task in a mostly M$ office environment). The time I have spent trying to resolve flaws in SuSE 8.0 and related apps is worth thousands. I am holding off a boss who wants M$ rather than Linux on my desktop -- and the only problem is that not a single Yahoo- compatible instant messenger will load without dependency error roadblocks. I invest the time because I have a heart for Linux. It is the same reason that I bought the Linux-based Sharp Zaurus rather than one of the much more popular non-Linux handheld pcs. I don't need nor deserve lectures from anyone, I need someone to wake up and smell the coffee that Linux will always be limited by hardware compatibility unless we are vastly more proactive in posting signposts to the Linux-compatible hardware alternatives. Users I sometimes encopunter do care, but then they expect things to just work..Or work as advertised.

Hope you bugged the modem manuacturer :). One nice well written e-mail should suffice, and one would hope that they get enough of those they will either makea driver for Linux, or decide to assist kernel programmers with details (this is probably a cheaper option).

At least you spent 20 to find out it was winmodem, I was spent 50 UK sterling to find out that the store had lied to me... Matt
The guys at BestBuy were cool. If it doesn't work they promised to take it back. Gotta return a defective video to the store next door so no big deal. (Tape was cut crooked, lack of quality control.) No modems, win or non-win at WalMart. Wasted trip. doc

Dear List, I bought a USRobotics WinModem when they were new. I had so much trouble that I called them. It turns out that they had so many prodlems with the WinModem that they had a 'secret' policy: replace any WinModem with a real modem upon report of problems. Try your modem mfgr. Good Luck! Hmmm. I am running ymessenger 0.99<mumble> from Yahoo!. I works reasonably well. I can even watch the stock market sink in almost-real time. IMvironments are not supported in Linux. And it screws up the fonts. It doesn't have the audio or webcam stuff either (big deal). I'm running suse 7.3. I used the version for an old redhat distro :-) -- __@ Greg Franks <| _~@ __O _`\<,_ Ottawa, Ontario, Canada |O\ -^\<;^\<, (*)/ (*) (*)--(*)%---/(*) "Where do you want to go today?" Outside.

Alos, it's got real important instructions on the website (yahoo's) about what needs to be done in a console as root. Some linking I think it all is. I just got my wife;s machine working by going to yahoo site and downloading their Unix version along with the dependencies they list. Installed them, then went on and got her id, etc. Then went back to Gaim, installed the yahoo plugin, and now she is on both aim and yahooIM through Gaim. Works without a hitch. ra
Yahoo actually has all of the necessary dependency files right there on the same site as their app? What a concept! Sure hope others will learn from their good-sense example. The big boss sent the business manager down with a replacement PC today. Will have to endure Windows on that machine instead of SuSE 8.0 because the absense of a functional IM app has aggravated him too long (there have been a couple of other glitches as well, e.g. inability to print to a shared printer, inabaility to access server file folders, inability to access certain files -- bought StarOffice 6.0 to resolve the latter but too late) ... will load SuSE on top of Windows after things settle down ... though I may wait for v8.1 ... hmmmm. doc
