I just want to add that I am very impressed with Yast2 in suse8. I think suse has done a great job as this is the most stable and useful application I know of in linux. So, if criticism is gonna surface, let's make sure we give credit where it is due.
I concur. There is one thing though: The 'slide show'... For the most part, stuff like that is perhaps 'mildly interesting' once or twice, but beyond that I personally prefer to see package information. So it kind of bugs me that I have to press 'details' every time I do some package install... What I'm getting at is, that I would *really* like some configuration options for Yast2 itself. Not so much configuration of *how* it works, but rather options for what it *tells* me, about how it works... On the order of: 'Slideshow' vs. 'Details' (during package install) Level of verbosity in package dependency check Stuff like that... On a conceptual level it might sound something to the effect of: "I don't agree that using 'helper' tools should automatically forfeit your right to know what's going on. I realize that getting tons of 'package this.rpm depends on/conflicts with that.rpm', might be trivial for the more advanced users (as well as confusing to total newbies)... but OTOH information like that might help up-and-coming people understand what's going on... (I know I learned a lot from simply looking at the dependency list in Yast, back in 6.x) What I mean is that I see a tendency towards widening the gap between the command line and Yast2, where I would like to see a closing of said gap instead..." Knowing that Yast2 oftentimes calls upon lower-level utilities like rpm, which for the most part offer you -v options on the command line, to do the actual operations, it would seem at least possible to have those options available in Yast2, too... In short: I would really, really like to see a 'preferences' module for Yast2... ;) Jon Clausen -- .signature ;)
