Wish list for SuSE interface.
I thought that I would start this thread so that list members can express what they like and think needs to be improved with the SuSE interface. While I am using 7.3 Pro and not 8, I know that there are some things that haven't changed that much. Here I am thinking in particular of YAST 2. As YAST 2 from version 8 on is the only SuSE package management interface, I would like to suggest that the wish list could start here. In particular, there are two areas: 1) Some people have commented to me privately that they would like to see YAST 2 packages more logically organized according to whether you are running a work station, server, etc. A little like Mandrake. 2) I personally would like to see YOU handling ALL SuSE RPM updates and not just some deemed important for security issues. The update process appears to need some tightening of loose bolts as well, as there are a number of people on the list that have complained about getting updates that they didn't select. There have also been comments about connection and download problems. Whether that is YAST 2 or server related, I am not sure. 3) I personally would like to see YAST 2 integrate apt-rpm package manager or something like it. This is a loyal opening critique, so don't get me wrong. I don't want SuSE to be a Mandrake clone. It is important to acknowledge what others do well and how SuSE could improve after the version 8 hangover that some on the list are experiencing. Cheers, Brian

regardless of the interface in my opinion SuSE package maintainers either merge the change log in to the RPM or the Quality control department understands that if there is a new RPM with a bigger version or the new so called patched RPM they incorporate a change log so people like me who issue a rpm -q --changelog package will be able to see the changes. -- Togan Muftuoglu Unofficial SuSE FAQ Maintainer http://dinamizm.ath.cx

I just want to add that I am very impressed with Yast2 in suse8. I think suse has done a great job as this is the most stable and useful application I know of in linux. So, if criticism is gonna surface, let's make sure we give credit where it is due.

I concur. There is one thing though: The 'slide show'... For the most part, stuff like that is perhaps 'mildly interesting' once or twice, but beyond that I personally prefer to see package information. So it kind of bugs me that I have to press 'details' every time I do some package install... What I'm getting at is, that I would *really* like some configuration options for Yast2 itself. Not so much configuration of *how* it works, but rather options for what it *tells* me, about how it works... On the order of: 'Slideshow' vs. 'Details' (during package install) Level of verbosity in package dependency check Stuff like that... On a conceptual level it might sound something to the effect of: "I don't agree that using 'helper' tools should automatically forfeit your right to know what's going on. I realize that getting tons of 'package this.rpm depends on/conflicts with that.rpm', might be trivial for the more advanced users (as well as confusing to total newbies)... but OTOH information like that might help up-and-coming people understand what's going on... (I know I learned a lot from simply looking at the dependency list in Yast, back in 6.x) What I mean is that I see a tendency towards widening the gap between the command line and Yast2, where I would like to see a closing of said gap instead..." Knowing that Yast2 oftentimes calls upon lower-level utilities like rpm, which for the most part offer you -v options on the command line, to do the actual operations, it would seem at least possible to have those options available in Yast2, too... In short: I would really, really like to see a 'preferences' module for Yast2... ;) Jon Clausen -- .signature ;)

Send this to feedback@suse.de see if you get a result dids
I thought the list would be interested in seeing the response from SUSE feedback, which is quoted below: "Thanks a lot for your mail. Some of the issues we were already aware of, some others are new to us. I forwarded them to your YaST-team - they are already working on SuSE Linux 8.1. Uwe Drechsel (feedback@suse.de)" Now let's see if any of the wishes are fulfilled. Anyone know what SuSE's track record is in this area? Cheers, Brian

I second this one (of course ;) There is already a nice graphical interface available (synaptic; refer to http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm). This one is based on windowmaker and not QT :( -- Richard Bos Democracy cost a fortune
Yeah, Connectiva uses Synaptic. You always can wirte a Yast2 module and
submit it to SuSE :~o

I've been told that a developement for a synaptic like application has been started, but this time with an kde interface has just (I mean just) been started! Some months patience and we've an kde synpatic :)) Still no YaST module, but that is code that needs to come from SuSE }~). -- Richard Bos Democracy cost a fortune
