I have used the dd utility to clone disks. That worked fine and if the IP address was gotten via DHCP in theory each box could boot on the network w/o problem. Wouldn't even have to go through the setup stuff that Windows does. Guess you could have a script that ran at firt boot then removed itself that would update the hostname.
