PMFBIB, My brand new Plextor PleXWriter 8/4/32 was recognized by SuSE 7.1 as is. It installed the cdroaster software and my music CDs play nicely! JLK On Wednesday 14 March 2001 07:11, you wrote:

It appears all the items in the list were older than those available in the shops : about 1999 I think.
That is true. The list doesn't get updated too often, from what I can tell. To be a seriously useful resource, it needs to be up to date and have a nice interface (i.e. not an ecommerce front end...).
Question 1 : What use can be this list ?
It is semi-useful for older hardware, such as I might use.
Question 2 : could any of you tell me which CD Writer to chose or how to be sure it will work with Linux. I'm using SuSE 6.4.
The vast majority of internal ATAPI or SCSI drives will work with Linux. You'll be hard pushed to find an incompatible one.
Here are some CD rw presently available in the shops I went, could any of them do ? HP MEDION MD 9332 Ricoh MP 7120A-DP Sony CRX 160E RP
Out of those three, I'd choose either the Ricoh or Sony.
To install, you'll want to use the ide-scsi module. This will make your drive appear as a SCSI device. Use the mkisofs and cdrecord commands to create your CDs.
