Hi SuSE people ! I wanted to buy a CD burner, never had one before. To be sure it could work with SuSE Linux , I consulted SuSE sdb on portal and got a list of 182 CD Writers with the indication whether they were supported or not. Then I went to my usual hardware shop with the list and could find none of them. I went to several other shops with no more luck. It appears all the items in the list were older than those available in the shops : about 1999 I think. Question 1 : What use can be this list ? Question 2 : could any of you tell me which CD Writer to chose or how to be sure it will work with Linux. I'm using SuSE 6.4. Here are some CD rw presently available in the shops I went, could any of them do ? HP MEDION MD 9332 Ricoh MP 7120A-DP Sony CRX 160E RP I'll be grateful also for some advice about the handling of these things . thanks in advance -- ============================================================================== Paul Ollion. ==============================================================================

Any current CD burner will work fine since they are pretty much standardized. If you had an older CD burner, the website list may prove useful as some older CD burners had problems. Christopher
THANKS TO YOU ALL Christopher, Fred, Ally, Chris, Jerry. You answered all my questions very fast and dispelled all my doubts about CD rws. I know someone else on this list who will be happy to know that too . True Landy ? I'll buy one as soon as I can and I think I won't have any problems with installation and use of the thing. Once more I highly appreciate this list. -- ============================================================================== Paul Ollion. ==============================================================================

Hi SuSE people !
I wanted to buy a CD burner, never had one before...............
Hi! I just instaled CD Burner on mine 6.4 its a Ricoh model MP 7063A and it just works fine, it`s an atapi/ide device so i have to use ide-scsi emulation which is little pain to setup if you are a newbie(I`m),but there are plenty of instructions howto do this, just make sure that you know which type you need or want ide or scsi device. Website>http://www.xcdroast.org< has a lot of useful info and links, also you can obtain latest X-Cd-roast software required for cd-burning ,the precompiled binaries work perfect on 6.4,just choose correct ones.If you need more just ask.See ya Alan

That is true. The list doesn't get updated too often, from what I can tell. To be a seriously useful resource, it needs to be up to date and have a nice interface (i.e. not an ecommerce front end...).
Question 1 : What use can be this list ?
It is semi-useful for older hardware, such as I might use.
Question 2 : could any of you tell me which CD Writer to chose or how to be sure it will work with Linux. I'm using SuSE 6.4.
The vast majority of internal ATAPI or SCSI drives will work with Linux. You'll be hard pushed to find an incompatible one.

Out of those three, I'd choose either the Ricoh or Sony. To install, you'll want to use the ide-scsi module. This will make your drive appear as a SCSI device. Use the mkisofs and cdrecord commands to create your CDs. Bye, Chris -- __ _ -o)/ / (_)__ __ ____ __ Chris Reeves /\\ /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ICQ# 22219005 _\_v __/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\
PMFBIB, My brand new Plextor PleXWriter 8/4/32 was recognized by SuSE 7.1 as is. It installed the cdroaster software and my music CDs play nicely! JLK On Wednesday 14 March 2001 07:11, you wrote:
