There is an option in the 2.4.x kernel for DRI support. I don't understand all this 3D stuff, but I know DRI has something to do with it.
DRI is short for direct rendering interface, i.e. an interface that allows the Xserver to directly access the video hardware. In order for this to work, the kernel has to support it, which it does for a few selected cards (AFAIR 3dfx, ATI rage/radeon, Glint and Matrox)
Philipp has expressed some knowledge of these ATI cards.
Well, that's no direct knowledge. I only know that a collegue of mine has a Radeon running in one of his machines. Don't know if he has tried 3D yet. I could check out next week but don't hold your breath as I'll be busy as hell to prepare for the internel training session I'll be giving in two weeks. -- Penguins to save the dinosaurs -- Handelsblatt on Linux for S/390
