Well, I finally got my copy of 7.1 this morning! Yeeeeeehaaaawwwww! Okay....anyway, I just wanted to give mucho kudos to the folks at SuSE. You guys have really outdone yourselves this time. My first task with 7.1 was to install it on our new VA Linux 3500 for use as an Oracle server. I couldn't boot off of the CD but I'm pretty sure that was a BIOS prob. I stuck the boot floppy in, autoloaded the modules, and it found everything (Mylex RAID, nic, ncr53c8xx). From there it was a flawless install! I'm on to getting Oracle installed and configured now. Great job guys/girls....are there any female hacks working on SuSE? I'm taking this one home tonight for sure to upgrade my own box! NOOOOO!!!! Please read http://www.suse.com/en/support/oracle/ first!!! And _bookmark_ that page. By the way, we'll have some changes to those pages up tomorrow, I'm working on some of them right now.

Thanks Michael. I already have that page bookmarked! There is little info that I could find there about Oracle on 7.1. All it said was that it was untested. Anything else I should know? I'm currently running Oracle 8.0.5std patched to 8.0.5.1. By your almost frantic first response, should I expect this to blow up in my face? Well there's quite a lot about 7.1 on the main page already, esp. on the new one we put up tonight (so far the rsync has updated it only on the .de server: http://www.suse.de/en/support/oracle/

I thought you're running 8.1.x, didn't expect to still find an 8.0.x out there... Don't know about 8.0.x. It should work since you use the glibc-2.0 compatibility environment for installation anyway, and after installation it shouldn't matter. That means if you upgrade a system where an 8.0x or even an 8.1.x is already installed it should work just fine.

I did read this info this morning. Any idea on how "shortly" SuSE Linux for Oracle8i will be available?

We're running it as a back end to an MRP software package. The software vendor has only recently certified their product for use with 8.1.7, so I'm sticking with 8.0.5.1 for now.

Does this mean I don't need to waste time installing the g20* stuff from 6.4 as per the SuSE/oracle site? I noticed that this was part of the install for 7.0, but isn't listed for 7.1. Sorry for the OT here, I guess I should have started a thread on the suse-oracle list.. Thanks again Michael, Ken -- "We can build a better product than Linux..." -- Microsoft VP Jim Allchin

Thanks Lenz. My upgrade went smoothly at home as well, but I'm afraid I'm going to resign my ATI All-in-Wonder 128 Pro to "Windoze-Only" status. 3D still won't work and 3Ddiag tells me that there's no 3D capable chipset. :( Oh well, all the more justification for that new Radeon or GeForce card! ;^) Ken -- "We can build a better product than Linux..." -- Microsoft VP Jim Allchin

Okay. I'm starting to feel like a complete id10T here. I picked up a new 32MB AGP Radeon yesterday, did a fresh install of 7.1 (due to disk lossage), and still no 3D. SaX2 finds the card just fine, but no 3D. 3Ddiag tells me the same thing as on my All-In-Wonder, "No 3D capable chipset found". I've got mesasoft installed as well. Can somebody who's using a Radeon, (or Lenz praps?) please tell me what the fsck I'm doing wrong here? Thanks, Ken -- "We can build a better product than Linux..." -- Microsoft VP Jim Allchin

Ken, et al, I'm having problems that seem related to kernel version and my ATI Rage Fury. There is an option in the 2.4.x kernel for DRI support. I don't understand all this 3D stuff, but I know DRI has something to do with it. In the 2.4.0 kernel that shipped with 7.1 this is clearly broken for the r128. I don't know if that could explain your problem, but I do know my card works much better under the 2.4.2 kernel. My network doesn't though. Philipp has expressed some knowledge of these ATI cards. Perhaps he can help. PHILIPP!!!!! This one's your's ;-) Steve

3d acceleration is a functionality of XFree. I can not swear to the All-in-Wonder PRO but the ATI Radeon will have experimental 3d support in X 4.0.2 Charles (-: Forever never goes beyond tomorrow.

Charles, As I've said, I don't fully understand this, but there is definitely some stuff in the kernel which affects my ATI RF. Right bellow the RF setting is a setting for Radeon. It is under the character device stuff. This is very different in the 2.4.2 as compared to 2.4.0. In the former there are many options for frame buffer stuff. DRI is short for direct rendering interface, i.e. an interface that allows the Xserver to directly access the video hardware. In order for this to work, the kernel has to support it, which it does for a few selected cards (AFAIR 3dfx, ATI rage/radeon, Glint and Matrox)
Philipp has expressed some knowledge of these ATI cards.
Well, that's no direct knowledge. I only know that a collegue of mine has a Radeon running in one of his machines. Don't know if he has tried 3D yet. Ken, Did you go look at XFree86's site to see if they ACTUALLY do support 3D with the Radeon? SuSE really does only use what XFree produces. If it does support it .. you would be more apt to find the answer there. The last thing I knew was that the only Xservers that supported 3D with that card were xig's Accelerated X. Give a look over at Xfree's site. I am interested in this as well because a friend of mine is looking at me for advice on whether or not to get a Radeon or wait for the GeForce3. Thanks for the tip Ben. I did check there last night and here what they said on their driver status page: "Accelerated support is provided for Mach64, Rage, Rage 128 and Radeon chips. Unaccelerated support is provided for all of the others except the Mach8 and some early Mach32 chips by the "ati" driver." Well, as I prolly indicated in my last post..I don't know as much about ATI's as I should. Your TNT2 card should work really well w/ XFree 4.02 .. mine does. I didn't do anything special accept for run 3Ddiag which told me to run the right switch2* script in /usr/X11R6/bin. I played Soldier of Fortune in all it's glory lastnight for 4 hours .. it worked fine. Heavy Gear 2 hasn't looked better then it does with 7.1+4.0.2. That's encouraging. I should have noted that I'm using my Viper V770 (TNT2) with the 7.0 version of XFree 4.0.2. I'll try again once I get 7.1 installed on that box.

I'm with you on this. I appreciate any help, so don't think I'm trying to hammer you specifically for info. I assume, they are talking about "accelerated 2D support" here, meaning BITBLTS and similar operations.
