That log shows no cdrom drive and now that I look at it only one ide interface ide0. Shoudl it show two? I know that the bios doesn't see it either, not does windows 98. What is weird is that this happened with no changes I could see, and has now happened on another machine.
Have you check the BIOS? Are the settings correct? Rarely, a misconfigured or failing drive can mess up the BIOS that you need to reset the BIOS before getting the to system to work again. Have you inspect the cables to make sure there's no damage? I sometimes replace a cable if I know it's more than two years old, or if I'm installing a brand new set of drives.
