MY cd rom has been failing. I put a new one in and get the same message, so It isn't the drive Here is what I get root@gandalf:/home/bob > mount /cdrom mount: the kernel does not recognize /dev/hdc as a block device (maybe `insmod driver'?) try 'mount -t iso9660 /dev/hdc /cdrom' If this works then look in etc/fstab for an entry like: /dev/cdrom /cdrom auto ro,noauto, user, exec 0 0 And make sure /dev/cdrom points to /dev/hdc.

Did you recompile the kernel recently? There's an off chance that something got turned off or on, and it's causing this error message. Christopher On Wed, 30 Aug 2000, Bob wrote:

Can you take a look at /var/log/boot.msg? If so, look for entries relating to your cd-rom. Is it identifying it as the /dev/hdc device or some other device? For example, I emulate scsi for cdrecording purposes and it's /dev/sr0 Alvaro Novo SuSE 6.4 Kernel 2.2.16 KDE 2 - Beta 4 -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

That log shows no cdrom drive and now that I look at it only one ide interface ide0. Shoudl it show two? I know that the bios doesn't see it either, not does windows 98. What is weird is that this happened with no changes I could see, and has now happened on another machine. -- Bob Rea Freedom is only privilege extended unless enjoyed by one and all --Billy Bragg rear@sirius.com rrea@askjeeves.com http://www.sirius.com/~rear -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq

Have you check the BIOS? Are the settings correct? Rarely, a misconfigured or failing drive can mess up the BIOS that you need to reset the BIOS before getting the to system to work again. Have you inspect the cables to make sure there's no damage? I sometimes replace a cable if I know it's more than two years old, or if I'm installing a brand new set of drives. Try putting append="hdc=cdrom" in your /etc/lilo.conf, then re-run lilo. -- Never trust a man in a suit -- cll -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
