HI Ron, On Tue, 22 Aug 2000, you wrote:
Well, the intent of the email seems to have been lost somewhere in pride and ego land, so here is another approach:
1) Thanks for the information on the 2.2.16. I did not know the stock kernel was unusable, and I swear I didn't see the 2.2.16 on the ftp site. Next time I will be more careful looking before i go outside the Suse realm.
Don't feel too bad, I searched for it too. Took a while, but I found it..
2) Since I am having so many problems with 6.4, perhaps I should reinstall? Can this be done without wiping out everything?
That depends. When you installed, did you make separate partitions for /home and /boot? If so, then feel free to do a re-install. My /home directory is a separate partition, and I've done a re-install without losing anything in that area.
3) For all the little problems. If I need it, I'll fix it. If I don't need it, I'll delete it. I was just frustrated with so much stuff not working, especially kbill! If it's just a bug, of course I'll file a bug report.
I've never done a complete install. I looked over some of the things it installs, and just didn't need it. I have finally started to pick and choose what is installed. Takes a bit longer, but for me it's worth it.
4) I'll file a bug report on the XFree 86 problem I had. Has anyone else filed a report on the Suse XFree RPM's?
I'll bet they have. But Xfree4.0 was beta when released, and I got out of the beta testing mode a while back. But when they say it's stable, you can bet I'll be one of the first on the bandwagon..
In general, the point was that I have had alot of probs with this release. 6.2 served me quite well for a year now. I was wondering if there was a concept issue at hand. I'll get 6.4 working, believe me on that.
You and I did things a bit differently. I had 5.3, then 6.0 which I had one heck of a time with. 6.1 was so nice that I didn't even look at 6.2. When 6.3 came out it looked good, and I got that one. I almost didn't get 6.4, but thought Oh what the heck. It's the first even numbered one I've used, and except for having to re-compile the kernel on install, it's been quite nice. The reason I re-compile is that my Cd-rom burner won't work with the 'stock' kernel. I have to turn off "probe all luns" and then it works like a champ!
Oh, and as for the useless statement. Where I come from, if I start having more and more trouble reports on product c than I did on previous products, I look twice at product c. It's a simple QC concept.
I really hope you get it working. It's nice, and if you are so inclined give ReiserFS a shot. The first time you have a power outage or hit the wrong button you will love the time it takes to re-boot..
