Thanks for information, the error message from sendmail -q only appeared
the first couple of times, but I will have a look through the man pages.

If you are running a dialup, the "host lookup failure" reported by Sendmail is normal, if Sendmail is unable to query your ISP's DNS. This would happen when you are offline.
If you are receiving lookup failures when you are online, and DNS from your ISP should be available, then there is something wrong with DNS (probably). Double check you have the right nameserver IP. Most (UK) ISPs give their customers a list of 2 or 3 DNS servers to use.
I seem to have resolved the problem by running sendmail -q, the mail queue is then empty but I get the message: \root... Data format error
Not sure what this means. Perhaps it is possible to run 'sendmail -q' in verbose or debugging mode. Consult the man pages.
