Hi, I have a problem with my sendmail setup. Receiving mail is no problem, its just when I try an send something that I run into trouble. After running fetchmail, if I give the command mailq -v it shows me a list of the mails I just try to send with the following message: (Deferred: Name server: smtpserver.get2net.dk: host name lookup failure) mtpserver.get2net.dk being my isp's server. As far as I can see, my dns is setup properly, nslookup will find the smtpserver and give me the ip numbers. Can anyone help? Thanks Paul. <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.0 Transitional//EN"> <HEAD> <META content="text/html; charset=iso-8859-1" http-equiv=Content-Type> <META content="MSHTML 5.00.2314.1000" name=GENERATOR> <STYLE></STYLE> </HEAD> <BODY bgColor=#ffffff> <DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>Hi,</FONT></DIV> <DIV><FONT face=Arial size=2>I have a problem with my sendmail setup. mtpserver.get2net.dk is listed as a smarthost/relay in sendmail.cf ? What does /etc/resolv.conf look like ? What type of system are you running... a dial up ? -- Darren Wyn Rees merlin@netlink.co.uk ASK your ISP to ADD the NEW england.* Newsgroups http://www.england.news-admin.org/accessfaq.html -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Darren,
My /etc/resolv.conf has my domain name of my home network and the ip number
:
search home.org
nameserver 192.168.1.1
And yes I have a dialup connection.
I seem to have resolved the problem by running sendmail -q, the mail queue
is then empty but I get the message:
\root... Data format error
Any ideas?
Paul

If you are running a dialup, the "host lookup failure" reported by Sendmail is normal, if Sendmail is unable to query your ISP's DNS. This would happen when you are offline. If you are receiving lookup failures when you are online, and DNS from your ISP should be available, then there is something wrong with DNS (probably). Double check you have the right nameserver IP. Most (UK) ISPs give their customers a list of 2 or 3 DNS servers to use.

Not sure what this means. Perhaps it is possible to run 'sendmail -q' in verbose or debugging mode. Consult the man pages. -- Darren Wyn Rees merlin@netlink.co.uk ASK your ISP to ADD the NEW england.* Newsgroups http://www.england.news-admin.org/accessfaq.html -- To unsubscribe send e-mail to suse-linux-e-unsubscribe@suse.com For additional commands send e-mail to suse-linux-e-help@suse.com Also check the FAQ at http://www.suse.com/support/faq
Thanks for information, the error message from sendmail -q only appeared
the first couple of times, but I will have a look through the man pages.
