then when I do $ junkbuster ~/.junkbuster/configfile & all goes well. (of course junkbuster is in my path)

Same here - I added it to my home directory solved every 'problem'. I'm the only one using my system anyway!
p.s. for some reason, junkbuster doesn't allow the ~ substitution for your home dir in it's configfile.
