As suggested, I quit passing the IO and IRQ parameters (that the manual AND /etc/rc.config said I should pass) and all was fine. This should prove interesting on the firewall I'm building that has two of these beasts in it-- only one of which I've been able to get to work. Luckily, I've got a couple of NE2000s lying around....
