[SLE] 3com509 weirdness
Hi all, I went to set up a Samba print server today using 6.2. The box is an AST p90 with 24MB RAM. I put a 3com509 in the box and when I rebooted, I got the following message: /lib/modules/../3c509.o invalid parameter parm_io and the module failed to load. I looked in /etc/conf.modules and found: alias eth0 .... options 3c509 io=0x300 irq=10 as I configured it. I rebuilt the kernel and it didn't fix it. Neither did changing the card. Plug-n-pray is turned off and the card is configured at io=300 and irq=10. Anyone have an idea of what's wrong here? The card is a 3com509b TPO. I always compile the 3C509 into the kernel. Try using the module without parameters & let it autoprobe (this is the only way to get it working using an installation kernel)......... Just re-read this. Are you trying tp pass "parm_io=0x300" for instance? THis should be "io=0x300" without the "parm..." On Fri, 3 Mar 2000, Dennis Soper wrote:

I'll try that-- I just need to get it talking on the network long enough t get to out kernel mirrors site (I *like* working for a university).

That's the odd thing, as I expected to find an error such as above in the config file. I will say that I use 3com cards pretty much exclusively at work, and I've had *lots* of trouble using them with SuSE-customized kernels. Cheers, Dennis

Ciao This card is really weird. I experienced that with io=0x300 and IRQ=10 the kernel driver is loaded but not a single network tool works, not even ping. I had to use IRQ=11 to get connected with the outside world. Maurizio Il dom, 05 mar 2000, Dennis Soper ha scritto:

Thanks Maurizio, I'm not the original poster but my network card is a 3C509. I'd been struggling with this same problem for 3-4 days and running out of hair and ideas until your post came down this morning. Thanks again. bob At 02:46 PM 3/5/00 +0100, you wrote:

As suggested, I quit passing the IO and IRQ parameters (that the manual AND /etc/rc.config said I should pass) and all was fine. This should prove interesting on the firewall I'm building that has two of these beasts in it-- only one of which I've been able to get to work. Luckily, I've got a couple of NE2000s lying around....
