Hi Robert, and thanks for picking this topic up.
Today at the project meeting we had an initial discussion on one of the items from the "What we need to improve" session at OSC 11. We discussed the problem around the number of mailing lists. I tried to capture the highlights of the discussion in the wiki: http://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:What_to_improve_osc11_session#Improve_co mmunication_infrastructure as bullet points.
If there is anything I missed or you have ideas in this area that should be captured please feel free to add them to the wiki. The idea is that we do not want to start the discussion from scratch when we pick this topic up again.
I don't see much to add to that point, at least as it is defined there.
I can only emphasize that *this* *is* *critical* to the project. Our communication is really terrible at this point -- I won't go into the details here and now, don't want to hijack the thread, and I already know a lot of people will disagree simply because from their position, they don't realize how bad it is.
I added a few bits about IRC to the wiki page: * we currently have 82 (!) IRC channels that match "#opensuse*" and "#suse*" * the list is here: http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/files/opensuse-irc.html (*) * most are empty or next to empty
#opensuse-pl is unused and be safety removed. Instead we use #suse.pl and it's an official channel for openSUSE Polish Community.
(*) if you want to process the data, it's also available as CSV: http://linux01.gwdg.de/~pbleser/files/opensuse-irc.csv
Also it appears that there might be a need for a volunteer to create a proposal at some point in the future, hopefully not too distant future ;)
Let's collect some data and ideas first :)
cheers
