Can anyone tell me why SUSE 9.1 install didn't install make and the gcc compilers? Or better yet, where I can find these things so that I can get my system back up?

I assume you've installed SUSE 9.1 *Professional*? The Personal edition doesn't come with development tools. Assuming yes, then run YaSt/Software/Install and Remove Software to install more software. You may want to go to the "Selections" portion and click on some of the uber-groups there to save you time, then go back later and use Search or Package Groups if you're missing a few more esoteric tools.
