Thanks for the info guys
However I tried typing "install console=hvsi0"
The install continues as normal, but once again when yast is started the
screen goes blank and I am unable to continue with the install.
Is the best solution to install SLES 9 sp2, if so do you know the URL for
the download?
Thanks
Martin

Martin...
There are HVSI bugs in SLES9 GA. These should disappear in SP1.
Following are the workarounds for a fresh install (without using SP1);
please do a fresh install rather than an "upgrade".
A)
1. At the yaboot "boot:" prompt, type "install console=hvsi0".
2. If output ceases shortly after hitting enter, you probably have the
wrong
serial port, so use "console=hvsi1" instead.
B)
1. You *must* configure a network interface with a static IP address
during
installation.
2. After install, the system will boot all the way up but will not display
a
login prompt. (The natural reaction is to press enter a few times;
unfortunately
this can cause a kernel panic.) At this point, use ssh to log in to the
system
over the network.
3. In /etc/inittab, remove the line that begins with "hvsi0". Replace it
with
this line:
hvsi:1235:respawn:/sbin/agetty -L 9600 hvsi0 vt102
4. Run "telinit q". The login prompt will now appear on the serial port."

[suse-ppc] Problems loading suse
onto ibm p710
Hi
I am trying to install suse enterprise linux power on an ibm p710. This
server does not have a graphics card, I am using an IBM 3153 terminal set
to emulate a vt100
I can boot to the sms menu and then select the cd device to boot from.
I then get the boot prompt and type install. The server loads the kernel
from the cd into ram and then states that it is starting yast. At this
point the screen goes blank.
I cannot therefore continue the install; I thought the server might be
trying to output yast as an x windows application instead of ncurses.
I therefore tried to install using the following string to enable
connection to eth0 using VNC. install vnc=1 vnc_password=abc.
The screen then prompts me to select eth0 or eth1. I select eth0 and the
kernel panics with the following error
kernel panic: hvsi_recv_control: service processor closed HVSI connection
Any help is much appreciated
Thanks
Martin
