It's not like I'm "missing the right fonts". Something else is wrong.
Right now, non-Latin text doesn't work in any program - not Mozilla, not Evolution, not Konqueror, not even Yast.
Does something simple like
LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 xfd -fa sans
work? The "sans" alias should expand to a Japanese font and "xfd"
should thus display a Japanese font, usually "Kochi Gothic" if your
only scalable Japanese fonts are those from the kochi-substitute
package. You can see the font name used at the top of the window
displayed by "xfd".
