Re: [m17n] Why doesn't Japanese work in Suse 9.0?
If it's merely an issue of display, then the issue is most likely related to the configuration of Mozilla and the OS with respect to the fonts installed. This is characterised by the boxes being displayed instead of the correct Japanese glyphs.
I think there is some kind of configuration issue, not limited to Mozilla. I've installed all the extra fonts that people here have suggested, to no avail. It's not like I'm "missing the right fonts". Something else is wrong. Right now, non-Latin text doesn't work in any program - not Mozilla, not Evolution, not Konqueror, not even Yast. This is trivial even for Windows 98! I'd hate to have to go back to Microsoft. Paul Davidson

I.e. I can assume that you have the kochi-substitute packages installed now.

Does something simple like
LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 xfd -fa sans
work? The "sans" alias should expand to a Japanese font and "xfd"
should thus display a Japanese font, usually "Kochi Gothic" if your
only scalable Japanese fonts are those from the kochi-substitute
package. You can see the font name used at the top of the window
displayed by "xfd".
