Does something simple like
LC_ALL=ja_JP.UTF-8 xfd -fa sans
work? The "sans" alias should expand to a Japanese font and "xfd" should thus display a Japanese font, usually "Kochi Gothic" if your only scalable Japanese fonts are those from the kochi-substitute package. You can see the font name used at the top of the window displayed by "xfd".
i guess he didn't run SuSEconfig after installing rpms... Takashi
