The Tamil input method modul for GTK2 written by Dinesh Nadarajah which is available from http://groups.yahoo.com/group/tamilinix/files/keyboard/tamil-gtk2im.tar.gz is now also available as an rpm package for SuSE Linux 8.2. Poblems with scim

I have some questions, problems with SCIM, i.e. the SuSE packages from M. Fabian: Intoduction: Since I found no way to install arbitrary RPMs from YaST, I installed the scim with "rpm -ivh scim*" (and I already tried to recover the problems with "rpm --rebuilddb" twice). I upgrade my system with YOU daily, I also downloaded and installed all new SuSE KDE packages. SCIM corrupts YaST software update: 1) The dependencies seem to be corrupt. I installed scim-0.5.1-0. When I start YaST, it complains that all other scim packages (scim-config-gconf, scim-devel, ...) have an unresolved dependency to "scim = 0.5.1-". That should be "scim = 0.5.1-0", I suppose or better "scim >= 0.5.1". 2) What's worse: If I then click "Ignore All" and "Yes, Really" (or how it is translated english, I use german), then I get a dialog "Ignore all changes? Yes/No". This dialog reappears in an endless loop, regardles whether I click "Yes" or "no". I can no more access YaST software update. The only way is to kill YaST (with xkill, respectively Ctrl-Alt-Esc). Now, I cannot use the Grafical/X11 YaST anymore, only the command line YaST! When I deinstall the SCIM packages, YaST works again... Next problem: PinYin: 1) What's "Smart" Chinese Pin Yin? - Is there a "normal" Chinese Pin Yin (preferabely open source)? - Does "Smart" mean "automatic reordering" or "automatic completion"? If so, then I'd prefer a "non smart" Pin Yin... 2) Isn't it allowed to mirror the Pin Yin method in mfabian's home? Get all from the same source would make installation easier. 3) Will a Pin Yin method for SCIM be included in next SuSE? 4) RPM Installation of Smart Pin Yin fails with message: "error: scim-chinese-0.2.3-1ul1.i386.rpm cannot be installed", unfortunately with no reason why it cannot be installed. Any ideas, other experiences? Regards Marc

Hi, I've used SuSE 8.2 since may, and my dad want to give it a try too. But he needs to write in Chinese for bussiness. Can anyone here help me? I already try to install SuSE in Chinesse but still can't input Chinesse. Pointers, web link, hint, etc welcome.... It is Unicode-capable, using UTF-8 encoding (also converts UTF-16 input). >From the CHANGES file: ============================================================================= Changes from mined 2000.2 -> mined 2000.3 ========================================= Documentation: -------------- The manual page was updated and thoroughly revised. Its primary source was transformed into HTML, roff/man format being generated. The mined web pages were updated and revised. The file "doc/compilation" (with compilation hints) was updated. Features: --------- HOP '/' enters an indented Javadoc comment frame. Interface: ---------- Options can be concatenated on the command line. (mined -uu instead of mined -u -u enables Unicode line separators.) Right-to-left script input support is now enabled by default. The option -b toggles it. Option -G disables (actually toggles) the display of certain control characters as block graphics characters (enabled by default). Option +G enforces use of block graphics for display of menu borders. May be used if the "alternative character set" capability is not configured in your system but your terminal does have the capability. Set output delay (-d0..-d9) to none (-d-) by default in all versions. The help command was unified on Unix and DOS versions. Not completely, however, as calling a sub-programm ("less") through the "system" call doesn't seem to work on DOS (it crashes or blocks terminal input afterwards, even with cygwin). See also next comment. A second help viewing mode is now avaible (HOP HELP, e.g. HOP F1). It displays help information within mined itself, restoring the previous editing state afterwards. This is the default on MSDOS for the reason mentioned before. Bug fixes: ---------- Fixed a screen-related pointer confusion after replacement with multiple lines (embedded newline) which could result in a display bug and page down could be blocked. (Very minor) Just deleting the trailing line-end of a file is also considered a modification (a file only modified this way would previously not have been saved automatically). (Minor) With UTF-8 auto-detection involved, the character count after reading the file could be wrong (ESC ? would have been correct). (Minor) The pop-up menu, when modified with HOP and thus becoming smaller, used to leave the frame of its previous width on the screen. (Embarassing) Although I was proud of "perfect responsiveness to window size changes" I had just forgotten to implement that for the case of a menu being open. Samba bombing when viewing directories containing Japanese files

I am using SuSE 8.2 Pro fully patched. I tried to view directories on other machines but as soon as I get to a windows based directory with Japanese titled files and subdirectories I get an error message (with a lot of underlines and sometimes a file extension, saying the file does not exist) but the directory contents are never displayed. Problems with canna and SuSE 8.2

Hi, I'vee installed the kinput2 and canna packages from SuSE 8.2 professional. kinput2 works, but converting hiragana to kanji doesn't work (kinput2 gives a japanese error message that the kanji server can't be uesed). cannaserver is successfully started during boot and is running (checked with "ps aux"). I've tried to remove the original /etc/hosts.canna, but now canna refuses to start. Then I tried an empty hosts.canna file ("touch hosts.canna"). Now the hiragana-to-kanji conversion works as expected. Any ideas what is missing? Japanese in OOo

Would the handling of Japanese in OOo (running in SuSE, of course) be off topic? (I've a strong feeling that it would, and that it should instead be posted on an OOo mailing list. Hmm. But I can't summon much enthusiasm for joining users(a)openoffice.org -- not because of any deficiency in it, but just because it averages a hundred messages a day. Perhaps I'm an email weakling.)
