In principal, install xcin, set the language to zh_CN (variables LANG (and optional LC_ALL) in the personal ~/.profile or in the global /etc/sysconfig)). When you then log in to X11, xcin starts automatically (because of the .xim file that SuSE installs in you home). You activate chinese input with Ctrl-Space and switch input method with Ctrl-Shift. When you enter PinYin, Space gives you the next ten choices. Unfortunately there is a bug in XFree86 that comes with SuSE 8.2. The mainland Chinese locale (zh_CN) does not work with xim. The locale of province Taiwan (zh_TW) does work. If you need Jiantizi (zh_CN), you need the following patch: Edit /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/locale/locale.alias and set the alias for zh_CN to zh_CN.eucCN (instead of zh_CN.GBK-0). As far as I remember there are two places to change, just search for GBK-0. BTW, to the others, i.e. Mike FABIAN: Is there already a patch in Yast Online Update? Regards Marc

As I have been asked the same question by quite a few people already, I added this to the know problems section of my SuSE-CJK Howto: http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/xcin-8.3-i386.html
BTW, to the others, i.e. Mike FABIAN: Is there already a patch in Yast Online Update?
No.

Marc Waeckerlin already was so kind to explain how to make xcin
work again for simplified Chinese.
But if you are mainly interested in simplified Chinese you
may want to have a look at SCIM which works better for simplified
Chinese than xcin.
See
http://www.suse.de/~mfabian/suse-cjk/scim.html
if you want to try SCIM.

Thank you for Xcin explanation (thanks marc & mike). My dad already tried xcin, but he said not as rubost as the windows solution. I will try SCIM.
