without fb of course. Easier solution may be just to add
radeon.modeset=1
in GRUB :)

So please set:
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_KMS=y
You can also simply load radeon with
modprobe radeon modeset=1
if you really are so adventurous to try this out.
