The point was that xine is not unique in having KDE applications depend on it, Gstreamer has that trait as well, and lots more packages depend on Gstreamer outside of the KDE project. So pulling in Gstreamer by default is not going to be a big burden for the system since it is needed elsewhere.

gstreamer is offered as an option in kde4 and that's exactly where it doesn't work for me whereas xine just works, in fact xine is a backend on a couple of apps I use.
