If widgets are unlocked and you right click items in kickoff there's an option 
to "add to panel" or "add to desktop".

There are _both_ "show desktop" and "show dashboard" applets, they do 
different things, and the kde4 "show desktop" applet works better than the 
kde3 version imo.
