Leen, I'm just back after a very slow download of the full KDE 3.4 (apparently there's a lot of us wanting this upgrade). I have indeed lost my system sounds. On Thursday 17 March 2005 11:23, Leendert Meyer wrote:

Well, I had a test user laying around. I removed its ~/.kde and ~/Desktop directories, but no way. I discovered I could play the test sound, but when I switched to my usual user account that worked too.
So a fresh ~/.kde also results in partially working sounds.
This is out of the question for me. I need a much more surgical solution. It takes me forever to get all my customizations and configurations right across all the different KDE applications I use. Lack of system sounds is far less onerous than starting from scratch!
BTW, KMail is beeping happily when a new mail arrives (every minute).
I don't get to see JAG for another 12 hours!
Looking forward is half the fun! ;)

Ok, a recompiled (and newly installed) arts-1.4.0 indeed fixes the system sounds problem.
(I had to install libjpeg-devel. Compilation took about 5 min.)
I'll consider the option of rebuilding, but I don't think I should have to, somehow...
