Hi, I've been assiduously avoiding upgrading my two arts packages since the issue of the new ones disrupting system sound came up. I'm wonder if I can continue to get away with this when I upgrade to KDE 3.4? By the way, I've been following Leen and Lee's exchange. I'm not into building my own packages for critical system components (partly because I don't install a very comprehensive set of "-devel" packages). Randall Schulz

If you tell me what the version numbers of your arts packages are, I'll tell you what happens when I install them. Cheers, Leen

I've stuck with these: arts-devel-1.3.1-3 arts-1.3.1-3

I've stuck with these:
arts-devel-1.3.1-3 arts-1.3.1-3
I ran YaST Install and Remove, displayed the full package list, issued the "Package -> All in This List -> Update if newer version available," set the two arts packages to "keep" (blue check mark) and finally clicked the "Check Dependencies" button. This set the arts package back to "update" and warned me that arts-devel depended on the missing package "jack-devel". Now, I can get away without arts-devel (I'm not sure why I have the "-devel" packages I do. I do no native development, but occasionally do build source packages, which leads me to install some -devel packages on an as-needed basis), but it looks like the installer is going to insist on installing arts-1.4.0-8. Thanks. I got the 1.3.1-3 packages, and I'm about to install them. I'll see what breaks. apt most certainly will help me in case of trouble. BRB. Cheers, Leen

Thanks for all the leg-work you're doing on this. I consider system sounds important, and I wonder why this issue hasn't been addressed by the powers-that-be already. This exchange appears to be pertinent and helpful: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/history/244052. I don't get to see JAG for another 12 hours!

Well, I had a test user laying around. I removed its ~/.kde and ~/Desktop directories, but no way. I discovered I could play the test sound, but when I switched to my usual user account that worked too. So a fresh ~/.kde also results in partially working sounds. BTW, KMail is beeping happily when a new mail arrives (every minute).
I don't get to see JAG for another 12 hours!
Looking forward is half the fun! ;) ---- Ok, a recompiled (and newly installed) arts-1.4.0 indeed fixes the system sounds problem. (I had to install libjpeg-devel. Compilation took about 5 min.) Cheers, Leen
Leen, I'm just back after a very slow download of the full KDE 3.4 (apparently there's a lot of us wanting this upgrade). I have indeed lost my system sounds. On Thursday 17 March 2005 11:23, Leendert Meyer wrote:

This is out of the question for me. I need a much more surgical solution. It takes me forever to get all my customizations and configurations right across all the different KDE applications I use. Lack of system sounds is far less onerous than starting from scratch!

I'll consider the option of rebuilding, but I don't think I should have to, somehow...

I've been following your discussion and thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. I did the kde3.4/arts 1.4.0 upgrade using apt4suse. When this discussion came up I tried my sound system out. (Amarok had/has been working just fine so I didn't suspect any problem, usually its my daughter who notices the missing window sounds) Sure enough when I tried setting window notification sounds in the control center there was no sound. I d'loaded the arts-1.4.0 src.rpm and tried rpmbuild --rebuild arts-1.4...rpm but that didn't work. Then I just installed the src.rpm, un-arked the tar.bz to a user account and did the ./configure; make; make install dance. All worked as it should. Then did checkinstall to keep my rpm database up to date and installed the rpm. (Had to "replace files" in order to overcome conflicts w/ arts...devel and arts...gmcop, but all seems well now) Back to control center, restarted the sound system, then tried a system notification, sure enough it worked just fine (in the control center). Later I realized that the window notification sounds aren't actually working but as you mentioned at least some of the program (kmail) sounds are working. So... it appears that the kde windowmanager sounds aren't working while other program sounds are. I don't know where else to look but I'm not sure that Arts is totally to blame. If I switch the sound system from auto-detect to threaded OpenSoundSystem I experience the same symptoms, sounds work in the control center but SOME sounds fail under actual usage. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it -- dh Don't shop at ZipZoomFly.com!

This is just a red herring. Actually, it was cockpit error. I forgot to insert my SuSE distribution DVD. With that DVD available, there are no unresolved package dependencies between the supplementary update and the original distribution. Randall Schulz
