I'm starting to wonder if it makes sense to keep the enigmail package
available as a package in openSUSE and would like to hear your
opinion.

Usually there is not much advantage in having Addons as RPMs but in case
of Enigmail I always offered an exception for the following reasons:

Please keep it as package. Having to install loads of add-ons per
user to make mozilla.org software usable sucks enough already.
Stuff that's basically considered mandatory for any sane MUA should
be installed together with the mailer. Even more so if we're talking
about native code.

Ok, but that means that support for prerelease versions of Thunderbird
and Seamonkey will be very limited.
I don't want to block releasing new Thunderbird stuff on enigmail
availability. I don't expect that to be a problem for real openSUSE
releases but Factory and mozilla:beta will break enigmail support
regularly (as it did already in the last weeks).

Wouldn't that be the case with the pre-built, externally downloaded
binary too? What kind of magic sauce do they put in their build if it's
not the case?

It would be partially the case also with their builds.
But apart from that it's not exactly clear from which source they build
their versions as that is not reflected in CVS branches/tags while they
have to support 4 branches of Mozilla's mailnews code.
I'll contact upstream to get a better idea about how that is organized
on their side.
