I see that package-lists-openSUSE-X11-cd has a requires on kernel-default
but I'm not sure whether that is installed. Yeah, this looks strange.

I suggest to file a bugreport,

preload recommends preload-kmp and this is provided by preload-kmp-desktop
and
preload-kmp-default. You have preload-kmp-desktop locked and as such the
solver picks kernel-kmp-default, which requires kernel-default.

Btw, you can use deptestomatic -v -v solver-test.xml to get some more
informations.

thanks for your reply... It makes perfect sense, except that zypper seems not
to agree:
