Sorry to break the bad news, but there is no way to possible catch the wide variety of possible breakege scenarios, and apparently not the needed manpower to get it working.
we don't need all. And we don't need to have it at each distro version.
But the yast-repair tools did still some good job, it's a shame to let this down.

As Christian wrote, possible repair scenarios are more complex than they used to be. On the bright side, many more live media are available than there used to be and from which manual repairs can be performed. I put Grub on a new disk using Knoppix, then install (more than one) Linux after, with each's boot loader on its / partition. Need to repair when using this disk layout method is quite uncommon, at least by needing an OM to do it with. I usually don't burn full installation media anyway, preferring net installs started by first downloading installation kernel and initrd, which I start with already installed Grub. -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
