I agree with Martin that backport is common term for process of adjusting newer software version to work with older system, but I can't say that repository names are often self explanatory.
IMHO, they can't be as short explanation what it means is at least one sentence long, and there is no README.txt that will explain naming conventions to people that just followed some web link. Explanation on the wiki is better then none, but you have to know that there is one.
