The desktop kernel actually helps, as found in bug 526780

However, I bet it's neither about HZ=1000 nor PREEMPT.  The suspicious
culprit is rather CGROUP and GROUP_SCHED, which are disabled in the
desktop kernel.  These were once known to have bad side-effects...
