I don't think you did something wrong. If a previous installation of
opensuse was present, the installer formatted / and kept /swap
and /home.

There are two choices ( http://en.opensuse.org/NVIDIA ): recent and
legacy cards. Just check the card list and select the appropriate
driver :-)
