Creo recordar que era: YaST -> xinetd -> activa por ejemplo el vsftp (si te falta algún paquete, se instalará automáticamente).

Eso es automático. SuSE emplea para ello el directorio /srv/ftp
Alguna medida que deba tener en cuenta. Mi idea es compartir con amigos archivos ocasionalmente.
Si, haz que solo se pueda acceder mediante usuario y contraseña. Yo al principio configuré para permitir acceso anónimo y en pocos días tenía cientos de accesos de extraños que robaban mis ficheros, ocupando permanentemente todo mi ancho de banda de salida, hasta que me di cuenta.
