6.4 using KDe I have installed linux and star office 6 times now, each time i try and shut down the machine it dies on me.( logout of kde then select shutdown and shutdown) I have logged on as root this makes no difference I have changed shutdown to "all" this again makes no difference. After selecting shutdown i get a screen which has either two or four of the suse logo's (gecko or whatever it's called) these are only just recogniseable as the screen is full of colour but is distorted to the point where the logo is the only visible thing. This screen stays there permanently(left it overnight once) or if a key is depressed it will change to a screen full of squares all different colours. When installing the os doesn't pick up my monitor (aoc spectrum 4vlr) or graphics card (s3 virge pci) so thes have to be set up manually or i'm stuck with 640x480. Once that is done everything works fine, except shutting down. The user guide says that you must be logged on as root to shut down, but if you have to logoff to get to the shutdown screen how can you be logged on as root? As you may have gathered i'm new to linux so if you can help, try and keep it to words of one syllable so i can understand. (feeling pretty dumb at the moment). btw this is not a live system, this on my home machine so no NIC, there is a modem but that isn't recognised and i didn't bother to set it up.
