6.4 using KDe I have installed linux and star office 6 times now, each time i try and shut down the machine it dies on me.( logout of kde then select shutdown and shutdown) I have logged on as root this makes no difference I have changed shutdown to "all" this again makes no difference. After selecting shutdown i get a screen which has either two or four of the suse logo's (gecko or whatever it's called) these are only just recogniseable as the screen is full of colour but is distorted to the point where the logo is the only visible thing. This screen stays there permanently(left it overnight once) or if a key is depressed it will change to a screen full of squares all different colours. When installing the os doesn't pick up my monitor (aoc spectrum 4vlr) or graphics card (s3 virge pci) so thes have to be set up manually or i'm stuck with 640x480. Once that is done everything works fine, except shutting down. The user guide says that you must be logged on as root to shut down, but if you have to logoff to get to the shutdown screen how can you be logged on as root? As you may have gathered i'm new to linux so if you can help, try and keep it to words of one syllable so i can understand. (feeling pretty dumb at the moment). btw this is not a live system, this on my home machine so no NIC, there is a modem but that isn't recognised and i didn't bother to set it up. Hi Roy,
it dies on me.( logout of kde then select shutdown and shutdown) I have logged on as root this makes no difference I have changed shutdown to "all" this again makes no difference. I suppose that this 'could' be due to a resolution change problem.
One way out of this, as suggested to me by Roger Whittaker, is not to use a graphical login. Although I see this as a step backwards, it does have its advantages. It's what I do now. Alt+Ctrl+Backspace SHOULD shutdown the X Server - I assume that it will take you out of the logon as well, although this would/could be a serious security hole (so maybe not!). I'm new also and had problems in KDE when I first set up - Not the same as you, but crashing when I tried to minimise the large tool bar, plus the odd spurious crash when running or exiting. It was due to a miss-configured graphics card/Monitor.
After selecting shutdown I get a screen which has either two or four of the suse logo's (gecko or whatever it's called) these are only just recognisable as the screen is full of colour but is distorted to the point where the logo is the only visible thing. Sounds like your refresh rate is wrong.
Try booting and staying in the line editor mode and then use SAX to reconfigure your settings. Don't select any options unless they are exactly right. e.g. I am using a Jean monitor but not the one supported, so I have to manually supply details of refresh rate etc. I also have an unsupported S3 Card, so I select the Generic option and let the system probe it for me. You may need your Monitor/graphics card adapter manuals to help. Start by using the lower values and work up, I found this best.
...or i'm stuck with 640x480 I find even 600x800 a waste of time in LINUX!
When shutting down I usually use "shutdown -r now", this does a re-start, If I want to shut down I just switch off at the appropriate point. This is stored in the command line buffer for me (use up arrow) May I suggest that you do not use HTML format in your e-mail, it can cause some people problems when reading your mail.
