https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675416 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=675416#c0 Summary: X11 fails to start after upgrade from 11.3 to 11.4 RC2 (driver nvidia vs nv vs nouveau) Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: RC 2 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: bnc-team-xorg-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: christian.esken-services@arcor.de QAContact: xorg-maintainer-bugs@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=416420) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=416420) X11 startup log showing the error in detail User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:2.0b11) Gecko/20110203 Firefox/4.0b11 While upgrading from 11.3 to 11.4 RC2 the installation program mentioned a swtich from the nvidia to the nv driver. Looking at xorg.conf it actually did so, but the X Server didn't start after that changes. The error message from Xorg.0.log stated: [ 1105.811] (EE) NV: The PCI device 0x10de0613 (GeForce 9800 GTX+) at 04@00:00:0 has a kernel module claiming it. [ 1105.811] (EE) NV: This driver cannot operate until it has been unloaded. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Use a Nvidia graphics card with nvidia driver (the closed source one) in opensuse 11.3 2. Upgrade to opensuse 11.4 RC2 (I used a DVD image) Actual Results: X11 does not start anymore. I consider this to be a major issue (non-working X11 makes the system unusable for all desktop users). Should you disagree, please adjust the Severity. Expected Results: X11 should start. I "solved" the issue by manually editing xorg.conf: 1st try: Change Driver "nv" to Driver "nouveau". This basically works, but the resolution was very small (something like 800x600 or smaller) 2nd try: Remove xorg.conf. This works perfectly. Driver works, including desktops effects and super-fast KMS (change from graphic to console and vice versa). I am running this now for about an hour and it looks very good. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
