Does vga=1 merely turn off vesa graphics (back to 80x25) or does it do more? If I recall correctly, I did adjust the vga=0x??? number to a simple 80x25 console and tested, without any improvement. (My recollection is slightly uncertain here since I tried several experiments last month.)
Yes, vga=1 just turns of vesa (and gets back to some 80x50 or so). And if you remove quiet, it may print out some valuable information.
