Then it reboots from the newly installed image. It gets only a few seconds into boot (initializing udev..., loading drivers) then it hangs.
So it looks like some driver is causing that. If you use vga=1 and remove quiet parameter in grub, do you see some oopses or backtraces? -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Does vga=1 merely turn off vesa graphics (back to 80x25) or does it do more? If I recall correctly, I did adjust the vga=0x??? number to a simple 80x25 console and tested, without any improvement. (My recollection is slightly uncertain here since I tried several experiments last month.)
Yes, vga=1 just turns of vesa (and gets back to some 80x50 or so). And if you remove quiet, it may print out some valuable information.
Seeing that this is now a P5, can you give me a sense of how urgently you need this information?
It's fully up to you. P5 means unset priority, not low priority. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I removed "quiet" from the grub boot line and rebooted the system to the point of hang.
Ok, thanks. As you noted, it looks like some acpi module is doing something bad. Jiri, at this time, I'm unable to do this. I no longer have a spare harddisk that I had been using for the experiments.
You can just install the kernel additionally and select it in grub, then return (again in grub) to you original kernel. I.e. you can have two kernels installed, one which you use, and this one for a single test boot. This can be done by: rpm -ivh kernel-*.rpm -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Would this work with an opensuse 11.2 base install or do I need to do it against an 11.3 base?
There should be no problem running 11.3 kernel on 11.2. The worst case is that it won't boot.
