Reopening as, sadly, the issue is back for me. It now occurs  less frequently,
which leads me to believe that my system experienced a combination of two
issues - one caused by insufficient swap size and another yet unknown. 

Also, even upgrading to catalyst 10.4 (whose readme notes claim that
suspend/resume was fixed :-)) did not solve the problem.
