It had not completed the Grub installation, so I did this myself using YaST.
New kernel seemed to run exactly the same as the old one (-> as expected, the
patched module still blacklisted).
Next I removed the blacklist for vt6655 and re-booted (yes, I chose the new
kernel) - same kernel panic though as before.
I'd be delighted to try a different patch, might be a bit quicker now I have it
set up but still > 1 working day to build from clean! I will very be tempted to
build on another host as suggested above.
