Reading through my original post one point seemed vague:-
I have noticed that ejecting and loading a dvd during boot causes
the problem to appear.
Should read:-
the act of ejecting and loading a dvd while the system is booting, seems to
make the problem occur with compiled in driver.

Does the version number not perhaps double as a flag to indicate a problem?
