No, I don't get the problem doing it this way.
I tried to start the services in the following order (included network as it
failed to start when dbus wasn't running);

dbus; haldaemon; earlyxdm
dbus; haldaemon; network; earlyxdm
earlyxdm; dbus; haldaemon; network
earlyxdm; dbus; haldaemon; network; xdm

Naturally restarted the machine between all of the above tests.
