This should be protected by mutexes in the kernel (ie. the kernel should prevent any hardware access once the device goes to graphics mode). But we have seen similar problems in the past. Once I disabled haldaemon, the screen came up without distortion. I edited the scripts to make sure they did not load. Unfortunately, the result was that the GUI still comes up distorted.
