Seems the real problem was device.map which read:
(hd0) /dev/sdc
(hd1) /dev/sdb
I changed it to:
(hd0) /dev/sda
And changed all the occurrences of (hd1,1) to (hd0,1) in menu.lst
That brought up the green openSUSE version of the GRUB boot menu! I was then
able to boot and finish my install (setting up root password, user, etc.)
Several times while finishing setup, I got an error saying "no package source
defined". Anyhow, I am very happy to have finally gotten 10.3 to halfway
install. Very impressed it detected my TV model exactly which I am using as a
monitor. Kudos to someone on that!
Perhaps the CD writer timeouts caused the IDE drive on the same ribbon to not
be handled properly as Tejun suggested, which then hosed the GRUB configuration
since some parts of the system saw the drive while others didn't.
