I was messing around with trying out some other distributions in the past week and installed Knoppix since it recognizes all my hardware. I downloaded openSuse 10.3 alpha 7 tonight when I saw your message and installed it, yet Knoppix keeps trying to boot up. I have two hard drives a 60 gig I use for swap and root and a 500 gig I use for /home. Unfortunately 10.3 does not recognize my 60 gig drive, so I had to install it on my larger drive only. That's grub failing to find it next stages probably because either BIOS -> hdd mapping changed or knoppix installation was removed. Have you installed GRUB during opensuse installation? If nothing else works, remove all other drives except for the hdd to install to and re-install. I'm a bit confused here. If the partition to use is /dev/sda2, please do 'mount /dev/sda2 /mnt' 2. Execute the following commands. 'hwinfo --all > /mnt/hwinfo.log', 'dmesg > /mnt/dmesg.log', 'cp /var/log/boot.msg /mnt'. 3. unmount /mnt 4. reboot and post the files created in #2 here from a working installation. ATAPI timeout is 30s and if you add recovery time to that it's somewhere around 35 to 40 secs. During that time, both the harddrive and cdrom aren't responsive - commands just get stuck, so it could be that the excessive delays are triggering timeout mechanism somewhere in the userland. Does it sound plausible? Benjamin, can you give a shot at network install with the cdrom detached from the system so that we can debug what's going on with the cdrom? I was able to browse it from another machine, so I know it is configured correctly. I have 10.3 x86-64 KDE alpha 7 on a CD, put it in, hit F4 to choose FTP server, and then hit install. It appeared the openSuse install hit the ftp server while it was loading the kernel. It then took me into the normal install screens. I got about two screens in and it said it needed an install repository and I couldn't get past the attached error. Most of what I read suggested using the chroot command, which I couldn't get to run (it appears because Knoppix is only compiled for 32-bit and my processor is 64-bit). What seemed to be most promising was when I simply typed "grub" to enter a grub shell and the typed the following: root (hd1,1) setup (hd1) quit However, when I rebooted I got the message: (hd1,1)/boot/message: file not found I was then taken to a screen where I could pick between the standard 10.3 boot and safe mode (although in black and white console as opposed to the normal screen). After my selection I got the attached error. I was then able to boot and finish my install (setting up root password, user, etc.) Several times while finishing setup, I got an error saying "no package source defined". Anyhow, I am very happy to have finally gotten 10.3 to halfway install. Very impressed it detected my TV model exactly which I am using as a monitor. Kudos to someone on that! Getting the BIOS device <-> detected device mapping wrong is one of common problems we currently suffer on x86/86 archs. This seems to be getting worse with SATA, USB, hotplugging and all. The problem is basically caused by the severely limited x86 BIOS (only 512byte for initial boot-strapping combined with no stable device mapping) but we definitely need improvement in the area.
